Meet the Maker ~ Little Peanut Handmade

Meet The Maker

Today we have the pleasure of getting to know Melissa from Little Peanut Handmade a little bit better, so Melissa¦

Tell us about your business:

Little Peanut Handmade is a boutique handmade label specialising in beautiful handmade accessories & clothing. All items are handmade to order with attention to detail & quality. Our young customers love our handmade hair ties, clips, bracelets & necklaces to name a few!

Our clothing range is made up of quality, everyday pieces constructed using designer cottons. Our clothing is designed to be worn comfortably with easy maintenance.

Not only do we cater for girls, we also have a vast range of jewellery for women. Our biggest sellers are our earrings. From buttons to roses to intricate painted studs, there is something for all tastes.

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always been a crafty soul, dabbling in all sorts of crafty activities. It was when I had a young daughter of my own & was not satisfied with items in mainstream stores, I decided to create my own accessories for my daughter. From then, I have not looked back.

Is there an interesting anecdote behind your business name?

Little Peanut Handmade came about as I named both my children ˜Little Peanut when I was pregnant. Handmade comes from the obvious, our brand is handmade.

What is the most satisfying part of what you do?

Being my own boss! Also, creating things for other people. Knowing that there are women and children walking around wearing pieces I created for them. It is amazing that people are waking up on Christmas morning finding accessories I made for them! It is surreal!

Have you tried something in business that didnt work as planned, or on the flip side “ worked out better than expected?

Every time I create something new, it is a risk. I love everything I make, but I always doubt whether others will too. There have been plenty of ideas that I have tried but they just did not sell. Its a matter of continuing to try things & seeing what does work & what doesnt.

Then there are things I am iffy about, not sure if people will love them as much as I do, and they turn out to be our biggest sellers!

What would be your best tip for someone thinking about selling their handcrafted goods?

Be passionate, be determined, work hard! The handmade market is a tough one with so much competition. However if youre the above things, you will stand out &people will see the love in your work. There are a lot of handmade websites out there that are affordable to list your items & give great exposure. Social media, get connected! This is a great advertising tool & a great way to promote certain events & upcoming products. Hhowever keep your business profiles professional and positive.

What is your favourite item you make? (show and tell)

I have too many to name! I love our range of girls boutique hair clips. They are not just your ordinary hairclip, they are handcrafted using the highest quality embellishments, they have a non-slip grip for all hair types & use non-toxic glue! This Shabby Chic set is my favourite. I just love the pink and blue colour combination!

Any personal or business highlights in the last year:

Business highlights include new stockists in Russia, Singapore, New Zealand & right around Australia.

3 things about you (not business related) that people might not know:

  1. I am a qualified Primary School Teacher. I graduated University in 2006.
  2. I have a fear of birds. I will cross the road to avoid walking past a bird. I wear a helmet when hanging out the washing! I have no idea where this phobia came from, however, it is severe!
  3. I do not like mango, strawberries or watermelon “ weird! I also do not eat any kind of seafood. I do love my sweets though.

Thank you Melissa, it has been a pleasure meeting you, the maker!
