Introducing: Hampsons Homewares

Furnish/ Hand Made Blog

With a background in fashion/homewares Elizabeth Hampson from Sydneys Northern beaches has been selling handmade cross stitches which have been hung up in nurseries all over the world. She designed Flipsy Flopsy Dolls and couldn’t resist starting something new. Hampsons Homewares only launched in June on Facebook and the orders have been coming through thick and fast ever since. She LOVES being a mum, working from home, sewing, creating, and being busy. She is so driven her poor husband bought her a week at Golden Door so she could relax and she refused to go! When not working she loves being at the beach with her family. Her husband is a flight attendant with Qantas so there is complete chaos behind the scenes.

Elizabeth loves the natural look and texture of burlap as it compliments the decor in most homes. Her designs are unique and truly original from the Kids Dictionary pillow to the Date of Birth cushion. The Dictionary cushion is a completely personalised product you email your childs name, adjectives to describe him/her and all their cute nicknames and Hampsons Homewares can produce a pillow you will treasure forever. They are the perfect gift for christenings or birthdays. She hand sews all the cushions and they are available with or without the inserts (save on postage).

Since launching stockists have been approaching her to carry her range so it wont be long before you see her products in all your favourite childrens websites. Another service they provide is being able to produce one off designs, basically anything you would like printed on a cushion or canvas is possible, you send the text or an image and they can make it. Another great seller is the Photo cushions, if you don’t have a digital image and would like to use an old photo out of an album just send it and it can be scanned and made into a cushion or canvas. The family cushions look amazing and are such a unique present for any family member. Recently did one for a Nonna’s 80th and she loved it! She also has a wedding range and the postcode cushion makes a great present for anyone feeling a little homesick and living overseas.

Website is on its way but for now she can be contacted on Facebook “Hampsons Homewares” or email any enquiries or order to Elizabeth at hampsonshomewares@live.com.au.

Pin of the Week

Make/ pin of the week

My daughter made these the other week at preschool and has been talking about the pretty butterflies they made ever since.

Very simple to do using household items. You could even do it with watered down paints rather that food colouring, just make sure that it is a watery consistency for it to work.

Give it a try this weekend!

Details here.

Meet the Maker ~ Little Paper Butterfly

Meet The Maker

Today we have the pleasure of getting to know Jo from Little Paper Butterfly a little bit better, so Jo¦.

Tell us about your business:
Little Paper Butterfly began as a hobby, creating decorative and interesting wall art for my children and my home. I use scissors and paper to create clever and beautiful artworks for people of all ages. I have a range of gorgeous personalised wall art suitable for babies and children as well as more contemporary designs for adults.

What inspired you to start your business?
I didnt set out to start a business, it just kind of evolved. I am not business minded and I never saw myself as a crafty person. Handmade is definitely in my blood “ my grandmother was a wonderful dressmaker and my mother was a talented sign-writer and artist. I viewed this as an opportunity to learn about business, design and to test myself and see what I could achieve.

Is there an interesting anecdote behind your business name?
When I was throwing around different names, people warned me that I was too specific and that Little Paper Butterfly might be too limiting. I told them that I would surprise them with the ways I could incorporate butterflies into designs “ I have added them to ballerinas, bunnies, baby reindeers, mobiles, table decorations¦there are endless possibilities.

What is the most satisfying part of what you do?
I find the process of bringing a concept to life challenging, daunting and inspiring all at the same time. There is a huge sense of satisfaction when the design comes together, with the right combination of colour. The final stage of seeing the design framed is my favourite part.

Have you tried something in business that didnt work as planned, or on the flip side “ worked out better than expected?
For every successful design, there are 10 or so not so successful pieces. I am an optimistic person by nature and always start a project believing it is going to be a winner. This year for Valentines day I wanted to create something heart themed. I worked on lots of heart shaped designs and eventually came up with the heart tree “ this was totally out of my comfort zone and funnily enough has been my best seller since February.

What would be your best tip for someone thinking about selling their handcrafted goods?
If you love what you do, and you create from the heart, then other people will love it too. Dont be afraid to share your talents with others.
What is your favourite item you make?
The Heart Tree is my favourite at the moment “ it is whimsical and represents love, hope, growth and life.

Any personal or business highlights in the last year:
A big achievement for me this year was setting up my website. This was important to me in establishing a serious and legitimate business “ it is no longer just a hobby.

3 things about you (not business related) that people might not know:

  •  I am inspired by travel, art, language and food.
  • I love to read Jane Austen, and Shakespeare.
  • I am a perfectionist.

Thank you Jo, it has been a pleasure meeting you, the maker!
