My 9 year old daughter has spent some time these school holidays at her two Aunties learning to knit. She is at a perfect age and Im amazed how much she has enjoyed it. Here are a few tips to make this learning process a fun one!
- Cast on for them – a little scarf would only need between 20-30 stitches.
- Stick with plain knit stitching (garter stitch).
- Using an 8ply yarn with larger needles will mean the knitting piece will grow faster and hold their interest longer.
- Every now and then, knit a row or two for them to make the project time shortened.
- Dont be too pedantic with dropped stitches, extra stitches or mistakes. These can easily be hidden at the end by sewing on some buttons or flowers.
- Bind off for them.
- And most of all, be patient with them.
If knitting is still a little bit beyond your child, try these other wool crafts.
