Teaching Kids to Knit

Guest Post/ Hand Made Blog/ Make

My 9 year old daughter has spent some time these school holidays at her two Aunties learning to knit. She is at a perfect age and Im amazed how much she has enjoyed it. Here are a few tips to make this learning process a fun one!

  •  Cast on for them – a little scarf would only need between 20-30 stitches.
  •  Stick with plain knit stitching (garter stitch).
  •  Using an 8ply yarn with larger needles will mean the knitting piece will grow faster and hold their interest longer.
  •  Every now and then, knit a row or two for them to make the project time shortened.
  •  Dont be too pedantic with dropped stitches, extra stitches or mistakes. These can easily be hidden at the end by sewing on some buttons or flowers.
  •  Bind off for them.
  •  And most of all, be patient with them.

If knitting is still a little bit beyond your child, try these other wool crafts.

New Mums choose Mumpreneur Brands over Traditional Retail Offers

Accessorize/ Featured/ Furnish/ Hand Made Blog

New Mums are turning to the high quality, unique offerings of Mumpreneur businesses to dress their little ones and deck out their nurseries, with the lure of online shopping and bespoke at competitive prices winning out over traditional retail shopping.

When Melbourne mum Rowena Hallam was pregnant with her second child, the thought of roaming shopping centres for nursery items left her feeling tired.

œThis time around I really didnt have the time or the energy to go wandering around the shops so I turned to the internet …theres plenty of lovely items available in the shops but a lot just doesnt last; the quality of the work is often substandard.

Rowena heard about Boondie Baby the Mumpreneur business of Melbourne Mum Lauren Kirkwood through friends. Impressed by the high quality of the handmade linens, Rowena browsed the website and fell in love with the designs and competitive pricing.

œAs a working mother I know how hard it is to juggle family and work commitments. I think its absolutely fantastic that women are creating their own opportunities shared Hallam; œ…I am more than happy to support anyone who is brave enough to put themselves out there particularly those like Lauren who have such wonderful talent and creativity.

The Boondie Baby offer of custom made nursery bedding, linen and décor was what sealed it for Rowena.

œWhile I loved the ranges on offer they werent exactly what I wanted. Its nice to have something a little bit different, that has been custom made to suit my furnishings, rather than the same old same old available in stores

Rowena adds

œEveryone who sees the pieces comments on how beautiful and well-made they are and asks where they came from. I have lost count of how many people I have referred to Lauren

Laurens passion for design and customer service are weaved throughout Boondie Baby

œI just adore creating something unique, offering mums and bubs a modern, handmade and unique piece. I ensure all my pieces are practical, a little bit of what Ive learnt as a mum goes into each design; from choosing trims that wash well to fabrics soft enough for babies and easy to clean after spills, its my way of supporting a new mum

Boondie Baby is available online at www.boondiebaby.com and in selected stockists, check the website for details. Custom orders can be placed via the website and can take up to 3 weeks.
