Five Minutes with Little Babushkas

Featured
Recently I spent five minutes with Frankie & Cessie from Little Babushkas and here is what they had to say:

What inspired you to start your business?

We always wanted to go into business together doing something creative and fun. It was a combination of things that got us thinking……a dress on a cute little kid at a party was enough for Frankie to dust off the sewing machine…the fact that we couldn’t buy anything unique to dress our own kids in, and also the influence of our mothers sewing for us when were kids (something about getting back to basics – not the mass produced stuff we are all so used too now) – this definitely resonated in terms of us wanting to make well made, funky clothes.

What was your first sale?

It was a green shirred halter dress with matching bag – oh yeah – she also bought the coordinating hair tie and some lip balm!!!. We have a photo of the little babushka wearing it as a memento of our first sale!

What do you hope to achieve in 2009?

Mostly have lots of fun and meet great people who also love designing and making handmade stuff. We also want to start printing our own fabric designs and sharing our patterns through design & cloth kits.

What was the last handmade item you brought?

Frankie bought a gorgeous softie from Mathilda’s Market in Perth. This great girl was designing, handmaking and selling them herself without even a business name or contact set up – it was all about the craft!

Cessie bought a handmade felt flower clip made in Nepal – Oxfam shop beauty!

What item couldn’t you live without?

We’d love to say we could live without almost any item….the truth though, the tv’s out of action at the moment and keeping the kids occupied for 10 mins so the sewing can get done is hard work!!!!

You can keep up to date at the Little Babushkas Blog or you can see them at Mathildas Market in Perth or on Made It.

I want to have a little girl just so I can buy smocked dresses – love the bottom left dress! Might have to just give them away as presents! Gorgeous stuff!
