Meet the Maker ~ Bird and the Lizard

Meet The Maker

Today we have the pleasure of getting to know Rachel from Bird and the Lizard a little bit better, so Rachel¦.

Tell us about your business:

Bird and the Lizard started in late May 2012 so it is very young. At the moment I create quilts and assorted cushions which are all OOAK.  I have many ideas racing through my head so new creations are always evolving. All my products are handmade by me using gorgeous quality materials. I am venturing into the market scene which I am very excited about.

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always loved anything to do with craft but in particular sewing & fabric are my passion. Im a bit obsessed with fabric, to my husbands horror!!

My Mum has been quilting for as long as I can remember so I give her the credit as to why I started quilting. I became so addicted and kept making quilts I decided to start my business.

Is there an interesting anecdote behind your business name?

Nothing too amazing but I love birds and my nickname is lizard!

What is the most satisfying part of what you do?

Seeing the pleasure someone gets from my creations.

Have you tried something in business that didnt work as planned, or on the flip side “ worked out better than expected?

Being such early days, nothing as of yet but Im sure the day will come.

What would be your best tip for someone thinking about selling their handcrafted goods?

Be patient as everything takes time, from designing & making your creations to getting your business known. Dont under value your creations just because others may not appreciate or realise the value of your product.

What is your favourite item you make?

As I only have a few items, all are my favourites. I love making the quilts and cushions, if I could give up my day job and focus on Bird and the Lizard I would love to.

Hopefully that will happen one day!!

Any personal or business highlights in the last year:

3 things about you (not business related) that people might not know:

  • I work full-time during the week and in my spare time I focus on Bird and the Lizard (oh, and my husband, lol)
  • I have a tattoo of an orchid
  • I also love card making

Thank you Rachel, it has been a pleasure meeting you, the maker!
