Meet the Maker ~ Little Paper Butterfly

Meet The Maker

Today we have the pleasure of getting to know Jo from Little Paper Butterfly a little bit better, so Jo¦.

Tell us about your business:
Little Paper Butterfly began as a hobby, creating decorative and interesting wall art for my children and my home. I use scissors and paper to create clever and beautiful artworks for people of all ages. I have a range of gorgeous personalised wall art suitable for babies and children as well as more contemporary designs for adults.

What inspired you to start your business?
I didnt set out to start a business, it just kind of evolved. I am not business minded and I never saw myself as a crafty person. Handmade is definitely in my blood “ my grandmother was a wonderful dressmaker and my mother was a talented sign-writer and artist. I viewed this as an opportunity to learn about business, design and to test myself and see what I could achieve.

Is there an interesting anecdote behind your business name?
When I was throwing around different names, people warned me that I was too specific and that Little Paper Butterfly might be too limiting. I told them that I would surprise them with the ways I could incorporate butterflies into designs “ I have added them to ballerinas, bunnies, baby reindeers, mobiles, table decorations¦there are endless possibilities.

What is the most satisfying part of what you do?
I find the process of bringing a concept to life challenging, daunting and inspiring all at the same time. There is a huge sense of satisfaction when the design comes together, with the right combination of colour. The final stage of seeing the design framed is my favourite part.

Have you tried something in business that didnt work as planned, or on the flip side “ worked out better than expected?
For every successful design, there are 10 or so not so successful pieces. I am an optimistic person by nature and always start a project believing it is going to be a winner. This year for Valentines day I wanted to create something heart themed. I worked on lots of heart shaped designs and eventually came up with the heart tree “ this was totally out of my comfort zone and funnily enough has been my best seller since February.

What would be your best tip for someone thinking about selling their handcrafted goods?
If you love what you do, and you create from the heart, then other people will love it too. Dont be afraid to share your talents with others.
What is your favourite item you make?
The Heart Tree is my favourite at the moment “ it is whimsical and represents love, hope, growth and life.

Any personal or business highlights in the last year:
A big achievement for me this year was setting up my website. This was important to me in establishing a serious and legitimate business “ it is no longer just a hobby.

3 things about you (not business related) that people might not know:

  •  I am inspired by travel, art, language and food.
  • I love to read Jane Austen, and Shakespeare.
  • I am a perfectionist.

Thank you Jo, it has been a pleasure meeting you, the maker!
