Meet the Maker – Made Wise

Introducing/ Meet The Maker
meet the maker

Let’s meet the lovely Jess from Made Wise.

Tell us about your business:

Hi I’m Jess, the owner/ creator of MADEWISE.

I’ve always had a love of creating and being crafty. When I was very little I would love playing with my Nanna’s button collection. It was my Nanna who taught me to knit at age eight and also gifted me her sewing machine so I could continue to learn new skills and let out my creative side.

What inspired you to start your business?

When I became a stay at home mum I continued to knit, sew and craft. Many of my friends and family kept telling me I should be seeling my creations. After hearing this numerous times I finally set myself up with an Etsy shop.

Is there an interesting anecdote behind your business name?

My business is named ‘madewise’, I chose this name because my maiden name is Wise and I wanted to pay homage to family for nurturing and encouraging my passion.

What is the most satisfying part of what you do?

The most satisfying part of what I do is knowing the handmade items I make are going to somebody who is clearly loved and I hope they will become treasured keepsakes. I love receiving reviews/ feedback, it genuinely warms my heart to have such lovely customers who leave such lovely words of encouragement and gratitude.

What would be your best tip for someone thinking about selling their handcrafted goods?

I would advise anyone out there who is thinking of selling their handmade items to jump in and give it a go! If it’s something you love doing the love will show and you’ll do well. Word of mouth and the wonderful world of social media will get going. And like me, you’ll look back and wonder why it took you so long to take the plunge!

What is your favourite item you make?

You will find an assortment of items in the madewise Etsy store, including  booties, tutus, bowties, bibs, cardigans and more.
My favourite items to make are the knitted ones. Yes, they take the greatest amount of time but to me they are the most special.
This winter will see some unbelievably cute hand knit toddler and children’s mittens and beanies added to the shop!

Any personal or business highlights in the last year:

I officially opened madewise last September and have been busy knitting and sewing orders ever since!

3 things about you that people might not know:

  • I’m only 28, yes I knit but no I am not old.
  • I am a twin.
  • Sticky date pudding would have to be the best dessert ever!
